Computer technology began in Adwoc in 1986 in the form of an
Accounting and Material management systems. Running on what was state of the art,
at the time, IBM PC-AT computers with 2MB of RAM and less than 50MB of hard
disk space. I had the honor to
program those PCs and to develop those systems for ADWOC. These systems developed into the company
Payroll, Catering and Personnel Information systems. They also embraced the emerging
technologies to their current state of multi-user servers on a Local Area
Network that connects almost every office in the company.
After more than twenty years of supporting
these systems as a part-time consultant, I have the pleasure to join the
company as its IT coordinator. The
responsibilities given to me by the company General Manager and long time
colleague Mr. Omran Abukraa is to manage a project to implement the future
Information systems for the company.
A task which I accept with great pleasure and enthusiasm; and which
I hope will bring to a successful close my life-time working experience
with the company.
I remember with great respect the brave
decision taken by the highly experienced and visionary Material manager, at
the time, Mr. Ali Attaweel to replace his working
perfectly and securely manual Material Card Index system with a new
revolutionary one running on three separate IBM PC-AT computers that did
their backups on small volatile magnetic strips called Floppy Disks. It took a man of his experience to see
the future potential of those new small previously unproven microcomputer
technologies. If not for that brave
decision with the highest amount of risk to all the company departments, I
think that the company computer technology would not be where it is today.
The current company network includes five
interconnected 3COM 48 & 24 port switches, distributed at the main
buildings of the company Tripoli
Swani Road
office. They connect all the
company staff to the various information systems of the company.
Satellite based links to the Internet have
also been acquired to connect the company’s remote sites to the
Internet. E-mail and web access to
our future information systems shall be important tools for improving
communication and delivery of critical information services to our remote
and mobile desert camps and rigs. As
well as to our clients and suppliers worldwide.
